Now entering our 16th consecutive year of serving Canberra's best pint, The Phoenix is still going from strength to strength. We're still driven by the same ideals that got us into the pub business in the first place: serve the best pint in town, create a great atmosphere, and build a pub like no other.  We've even outlived the Howard government.

AUTHENTIC FEEL

There’s nothing fake about the well-worn charm of The Phoenix, its character is the real thing. Step inside the Phoenix’s cool, dark interior and sink into a worn old couch, mellow out and spout the kind of talk people spout when they’re quenching their thirst with a fine brew and forgetting the noise and nonsense of the world outside.

GREEN PLASTIC

Ahh, Irish pubs. Some aren't, really. You think if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. And, you know you're probably right, because let's face it, all those Irish pubs hanging off a corner like a McDonalds franchise look the bloody same. Made by gnomes in Melbourne and shipped Australia-wide. Here at the Phoenix we don't flog our culture like it's a plaster leprechaun on special in a two-dollar shop.The Phoenix isn’t just another one of those Irish pubs. It's a culture unto itself.

God forbid The Phoenix should ever suffer a fire, but if it did it would surely light up the Canberra landscape for miles around, such is the proliferation of wooden furniture and genuine antique collectibles. You get the feeling that with the popularity of fake plastic Irish themed pubs that was all the rage recently, that some of them would surely melt if they ever came within a match strike of a flame. At The Phoenix our driving philosophy has always been to help make a great atmosphere setting while serving a great pint, and bringing raw talent to entertain our punters. We're certainly not here to make a fast plastic buck with a false plastic presentation. We're just here to have a good time and have some fun along the way.

RELAXED CONVERSATION

A funny thing happened when The Phoenix opened, people just came in and started talking. And they haven't stopped. We don't need a jukebox to fill in a conversational void. There's always something on the minds of Phoenix customers, especially in a city surrounded by politics and focused on national social issues. Sometimes they make a terrible din, and awful racket enough to wake the dead.  But, should you run out of things to talk about, there are plenty of conversation pieces at the bar cluttered with odd thingumajigs, abstract paintings, prints and postcards, each one with a story behind it.

YOUR CHOICE

Besides Guinness, which is always great at The Phoenix, we have a wide selection of foreign and local brews that flow from the taps or squirt from the bottle. We've got Kilkenny, Magners and Murphys and a bunch of others. Plus a range of spirits, wines and cocktails that our staff are only too happy to pour into you. And if you're starving, we may even give you some light snacks to keep you drinking and in the mood. We also sell cigarettes & cigars but you'll have to take yourself outside to enjoy them.

ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE

Rest assured, when the lights go dim and the band takes to the stage, The Phoenix takes on a life of its own. We like to book bands that are up and coming or established from around Canberra and also from interstate. We also have Stand-up nights and something we like to call Bootleg Night. Either way, you're always sure to find something entertaining, fresh and challenging on at The Phoenix.
